The Sea Dragon is
a like swing set, it is a pendulum rides. They can give you a sense of flying. With more
force used to increase the height of the arc, the greater increase in velocity
in the downward swing. Once the force stops, the swing will slow down and
eventually stop.
Oscillation
Oscillation is the period of time it takes to go from one
point & back to the same point about a pivot. The equation to find the
period of oscillation is:
Velocity
You can find velocity of a pendulum ride by using the equation:
The value for velocity you get is the velocity of the ride at the bottom of
the ride.
Kinetic & Potential Energy
When a pendulum swings from a cord, the cord is tight at the bottom and is slack at the top. This is because of potential energy being at its minimum at the top of the cord & kinetic energy being at its max. at the bottom. You can use the equations:
KE=1/2*m*v^2 and PE = mgh
to find the kinetic and potential energies of the ride.
The law of conservation says that all energy must be accounted for and gives us the equation:
KE+PE=total energy and
PE=KE.
Also one should keep in mind that some of the energy is lost to friction.
G's
One g is equivalent to 9.8 m/^2, the value of gravity. If a
ride were to have an acceleration of 19.6 m/s^2, then that would mean it has 2
g's. On pendulum rides, one can experience high g-forces. You
can experience higher g-forces when you pass the bottom of the circular arc.
G-forces are caused by the amount of force applied by the seat, or in other
words the normal force.
Weightlessness
On pendulum rides, a rider will experience some
weightlessness. Only if the pendulum makes a circular motion, 360º turn, will
they experience a complete sense of weightlessness. You can experience this
weightlessness near the top of the pendulum ride. Keep in mind that when you
feel weightlessness, it is due to a lack of normal force pushing upward on you.
Thus un-enabling you to have a sense of your weight.
Motion Sickness
Many people feel nauseous when they get on a pendulum ride. This sickness is called motion sickness, or seasickness, which is caused by sensory overload or the apparatus that senses motion in your inner ear doesn't coincide with the information you get from your eyes.
