Terms and Definitions:
Acceleration - Change in velocity divided by the time period over which it occurs. [m/s]
Angular Momentum - Quanity of rotational movement. For a rotating object, product of moment of inertia and angular velocity.
Average Acceleration - Acceleration measured over a finite time interval.
Average Velocity - Velocity measured over a finite time interval.
Buoyant Force - Upward force on an object immersed in fluid (such as air.)
Cosine - The ratio of an adjacent side to the hypotenuse.
Distance - The separation between two points. A scalar quanity. [m]
Displacement - The net distance traveled. [m]
Drag - Resistance Force on an object moving through a fluid.
Energy - Non-material property capable of causing changes in matter. [J]
Fletch - To modify an arrow in a way that will add stability in flight.
Force - Agent that results in acceleration or deforming an object. [N]
Friction - Force opposing relative motion of two objects that are in contact.
Gravitational Force - Attraction of objects due to their mass.
Hooke's Law - Deformation of an object is proportional to the force causing it.
Impluse - Product of force and time interval over which it acts. [Ft]
Kinetic Energy - Energy of an object due to it's motion. [J]
Machine - A device for changing the direction of or multiplying forces.
Mechanical Advantage - Ratio of resistance force to effort force in a machine.
Mechanical Enegry - Sum of potential and kinetic energy. [J]
Momentum - Product of object's mass and velocity.
Potential Energy - Enery of an object due to its position of state. [J]
Recurve - To curve the ends of the bow away from the archer; acts as a level to spread forces.
Robin Hood - To strike a target with another arrow in it, resulting in the splitting of the first arrow.
Sinew - High-tensile strength animal tendons with a high spring constant.
Span - The drawing back of a crossbow.
Tiller - Rotational movement of the arrow as it is loosed OR the wooden stock upon which a crossbow is mounted.
Tensile Strength - Ability to resist forces that causes stretching.
Velocity - Ratio of distance traveled to the time it is traveled in. [m/s]
Weight - Force of gravity upon an object. [N]
Work - Product of Force and the Displacement in the Direction of the Force. [J]
