Introduction
The sport of auto racing is as much physics as driving skill. The actions of the automobile and results of driver input can be explained with modern science and math. Drivers have known this for years and have written many volumes of work on the relation between science and racing. In this web page we will try to explain this relation in a simple format, summarizing these works.
For information, we used written work by famous racer and engineer Piero Taruffi, who is known for his thorough technical journals on racing physics. We also used a lot of information from the Physics of Racing series by Brian Beckman. Finally, we turned to the reference guides from the Gran Turismo series of racing simulators by Polyphony Digital, written by members of the famous Skip Barber Racing School. Please support these sources and visit their web sites at our links page.
