Torque comes from the Latin word "to twist". Torque is to rotate around an axis. In skating in order for a skater to rotate they must exerts a torque on their body. To do this they must push against the ice. Torque allows the hockey player to turn around while on skates. If there was no torque, the hockey players would have to stop completely in order to turn around.
