Operation Egg Launch '98

Physics Project

Operation Egg Launch: (Official)

Purpose: To reinforce the concepts of acceleration, velocity, force, energy transfer, and torque; and to introduce the concept of projectile motion.

This years launch has a few new twists. An egg must be launched from a device with the intent of attaining a distance of 10 meters. The Launching device may not exceed the dimensions of .125 cubic meters (see specs. below). Each team of 2 students must build a launching device that will propel an egg 10 meters to a target. The target will be a standard hula-hoop, (I hope they still make these), with its center 10 meters away from the starting line. The front of the launch vehicle will be set behind the starting line and must remain behind the line before, during, and after the launch. Each team will be allowed 2 launches, the most accurate will be used as the graded launch.
A Third "10 pt. Bonus" Launch will be preformed for max. distance.

Specifications:

  • Launch vehicle size: Max = .125 cubic meters with maximum diameter in one direction = 1 meter (fully extended)
  • Launch vehicle mass: sufficient to secure its position at the starting line
  • Launch mechanism: self-triggering mechanical mechanism. (no explosives, gases, or compressed substances)
  • Limitation: "sling shot" type mechanisms will not be accepted
  • Egg: unaltered raw Grade A Large Brown
  • Safety: Any catapult that appears to be unsafe will not be allowed to launch
  • Egg integrity: The egg must remain intact until it impacts the ground.
  • Construction log: A dated, detailed diary of your progress is to be kept current and may be checked without notice. Points will be deducted if it is found to be unavailable, inaccurate or not current.
  • Set-up: A 3-min. period will be allowed for set-up of the launching mechanism for each trial. If the launcher is unable to perform after this period, that trial will be considered complete.
  • Trials: The team launch time will be chosen randomly. All teams will complete trial 1 before trials 2 and 3 are to take place.
  • Modifications: Modifications may be made on the launch site only. No modification will be allowed at any other time. (bring your tools to the site)
