Copyright © 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 Mr. Fizzix TMThe Siege Engine Project involves conducting library research (teams of two students) in order to become informed of the physics, history, and mechanics of the Medieval Siege Engine. You are to conduct an extensive search of the technical and historical literature about the Medieval / Roman Siege Engine. This includes but is not limited to the trebuchet, ballista, and the mangonel. This literature search includes a search of both the library and the World Wide Web resources. Research is due in one week if class time is allowed. DUE 10/30/2006 To begin your search, you could utilize one of the many Internet search engines. These include Web Crawler, Excite, Lycos, and Alta Vista. Using a search engine involves typing in a keyword (e.g. "catapults") or a few key words, often separated by the AND operator (e.g., "physics AND trebuchet") and waiting as the search engine prepares a list of registered web pages containing information on your keyword. Once the list has been compiled, click on any of the listed web pages to obtain information on the topic. A thorough and well-documented literature search should help in formulating a hypothesis on the design of your project. Any cited materials should be printed in its original format and turned in with your documentation. Only the works that are cited are to be turned in and only these pages are to appear on your "works cited" page of your paper. A separate research trail list should be submitted on the research trail form available in the classroom. Research is to include 5 primary (reputable journals, internet and, magazines) and one secondary source (textbook, encyclopedia) minimal. At least three of the primary sources must be from the internet. Other sources may be used to enhance and re-enforce your paper. Proper MLA documentation format sheets of internet and other sources are available in the C.C.H.S. school library or click on the MLA link above. All papers are to be 10-12 cpi and double or one and a half spaced. The length of the paper should be long enough to substantiate a thorough literature search of the topics. Illustrations, sketches, and other graphic materials may be included in the paper. "A Statement on PlagiarismUsing someone else's ideas or phrasing and representing those ideas or phrasing as our own, either on purpose or through carelessness, is a serious offense known as plagiarism. "Ideas or phrasing" includes written or spoken material, of course — from whole papers and paragraphs to sentences, and, indeed, phrases — but it also includes statistics, lab results, art work, etc. "Someone else" can mean a professional source, such as a published writer or critic in a book, magazine, encyclopedia, or journal; an electronic resource such as material we discover on the World Wide Web; another student at our school or anywhere else; a paper-writing "service" (online or otherwise) which offers to sell written papers for a fee." http://webster.commnet.edu/mla/online.shtml |
